Deep Creek Ranch in central Texas has established herds of exotic game, such as blackbuck, fallow deer, Rocky Mountain elk, scimitar-horned oryx, blue wildebeest, aoudad sheep, and red lechwe, as well as native whitetail deer and wild turkey. Scimitar-horned oryxScimitar-horned oryx are a strikingly beautiful medium-sized African antelope with graceful sweeping horns. Both males and females have horns; with female Oryx horns generally reaching longer lengths. They are nearly as renowned for their meat as they are as their beauty. Oryx are a diurnal (active in the day) species making them a perfect complement to more nocturnal species such as whitetail, aoudad, or elk. Scimitar-horned oryx are considered extinct in their native range; as such a Federal Fish and Wildlife permit is required in order to hunt these magnificent animals. In April of 2012, Deep Creek Ranch was approved for these permits. Deep Creek Ranch is fully committed to the conservation of oryx. To this end, a portion of all oryx hunts is donated to enhance oryx in their native range.
Hunts are conducted throughout the year and usually involve spot and stalk hunting. Typical shots will be 150-200 yards. Fallow DeerMediterranean deer with incredibly large framed antlers generally consisting of a palmed main beam towards the top of the antler. These remarkable deer come in 4 color phases including menil (chestnut with spots year around), common (dark chestnut color with spots in summer turning to dark brown with very faint spots or no spots in the winter), black (commonly called chocolate), and the rare white color phase. Deep Creek Ranch boasts a fallow breeding herd that consists of all four color phases.
Fallow deer generally shed antler velvet in late August with hunting commencing soon afterward. Hunting continues fallow shed their antlers, typically in early march.. Rocky Mountain ElkWith their giant size, massive antlers, and world-renowned meat, Rocky Mountain Elk need no introduction. Deep Creek Ranch offers a unique opportunity to hunt an established herd of Elk in a setting as fitting to their nature as you will find in Texas. With deep canyons, ample brush, and lowland parks, a Deep Creek Ranch Elk hunt is one you will never forget!
Elk hunts generally consist of spot-and-stalk style hunting, although blind hunting is available. The elk rut starts at the end of August, generally running into the first week in October. One of the most enjoyable hunts available at Deep Creek Ranch is sneaking into or calling up a bugling bull Elk. AoudadTake one look at the topography of Deep Creek Ranch, and you know that aoudad feel right at home here. Renowned for their intelligence and inherent wildness, aoudad are considered one of the toughest exotic game trophies available in Texas. The aoudad herd at Deep Creek Ranch was introduced nearly 30 years ago, thereby enhancing their innate wildness with intimate knowledge of the property. The age of the herd combined with incredible genetics have yielded the Estate Division #1 and pending #2 records for Safari Club International. Whitetail DeerThe whitetail herd at Deep Creek Ranch gives you all of the challenge that whitetails are known for but with the management advantages that a high fence gives you. Every whitetail was born wild on the property; you won’t find any ear tags or tattoos on our deer. Given the size and available cover at Deep Creek Ranch, this is a truly challenging hunt. Despite extensive scouting with trail cameras, whitetail bucks are killed each year that are unknown on the ranch. Blackbuck AntelopeOne of the smallest antelope available to hunt in Texas, Blackbuck are renowned for their beautiful black capes, distinctive facial markings and long “corkscrew” V-shaped horns. Aside from their beauty, Blackbuck are often found in top five lists for their tasty venison. Deep Creek Ranch boasts a large breeding herd of blackbuck, which can be found throughout the more open areas on the ranch.
Mature male Blackbuck are highly territorial making them accessible from blinds, spot and stalk, or even bow hunting from a pop-up blind. Shots typically range from 100-200 yards. PLEASE NOTE: Texas License is required of all hunters. A license can be purchased with the Texas Park and Wildlife (click here). |
